Nudism for Newbies

The first nudist camp opened in Germany in the early 1900s; German immigrants brought the idea of healthy naturism to the United States, but the movement met with resistance.
In the 1950s, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that nudism is allowed in private resorts.
A choice remains: hedonistic playground or wholesome camp?

Dear Dejah,
Do you know of any nudist camps in Michigan? What is the etiquette at these places? Do people have sex at nudist colonies?
Scott

Well, Scott, there are two different types of nudist camps throughout the country: purist and swinger-friendly. Pure nudists revel in the natural side of just being naked in nature. They aren’t as interested in sex as people who frequent the more swinger-friendly camps. So, these vistas may be better for first-timers looking to experience nudism in a public setting. The only downside to these settings is that some are very family-friendly. You’ll find people from great-grandmothers to college students at naturist events, but I still find the sight of nudist children a bit shocking despite my own upbringing. If you wanted to have a relaxing weekend with little sexual pressure, however, places like Forest Hills in Saranac or Turtle Lake in Union City might be worth the trip.

As for the more swinger-friendly resorts, the etiquette differs by location. All nudist events require that participants bring a towel to sit on at all times for hygienic purposes. Beyond that, each resort varies as its tolerances of public sexuality. Cherry Lane in the Irish Hills area, one of my personal favorites, manages to find a good balance between pure nudism and swinger sexuality. Their rules restrict sexual displays to enclosed areas, i.e. your camper or tent, and leave the common areas open for mingling. Other camps, like Sun Aura in Roselawn, IN, may encourage more exhibitionism as they see fit. (Always check the camp rules online before going.) If you’re interested in attending the more swinger-friendly camps, I’d recommend either Cherry Lane Nudist Resort or Northaven as two good starting options; they run weekend specials, dances, and events. If you’re willing to make the drive, Sun Aura with its distinctive female-leg statue can be worth the trip as the crowd is somewhat younger than the regulars at the Michigan events.

I hope that gives you a starting point, Scott. All these places have Internet sites, so read up and determine which one would be the best fit for you. If you’re looking for a local group that does smaller events as a warm up, I’d also recommend Southeast Michigan Naturists. I cannot vouch for their slant as I’ve only met a couple of members, but they seem to have more purist leanings as opposed to hosting swinger events. They seem like a nice group of people, so feel free to check them out too.

Happy camping,
Dejah
