Brandon
Wiard’s Super Secret Double Awesome Japanese Import B Side
Collection is a limited-edition collection of acoustic demos and
a handful of songs with his band. It’s really just a taste
of what’s to come, as Wiard has a new release on the way.
Singing
about bitter infidelities, cigarettes, pretty Ypsi girls getting
tattoos and other stuff of the local landscape, the Ann Arbor native
creates a heartsick, poppy world. The lyrics veer into maudlin territory
occassionally (such as when the light in an unfaithful girl’s
eyes is “a fire sparked in hell”), but this is a minor
complaint; in general, the songs tell stories of innocence turned
into exprience in nuanced, charmingverses: “Back in Burlington
you were a little queen with your pom-poms and your methemphetamine...”
(“Ypsilanti.”) With his Elvis Costello-ish voice and
clever moments, Waird is one to watch.
Brandon
Wiard’s second album, Painting a Burning Building, will be
released soon; check www.brandonwiard.com
